DanceWorks Chicago

Company Information

Founded Year
DANCEWORKS CHICAGO (DWC), was founded in May 2007, as an organization committed to building foundations for individual artistic growth in dancers and choreographers. DWC provides early career artists a laboratory of sorts to propel themselves and the art form to a new level through training, collaboration, mentorship, and performance. Led by celebrated dance professionals Andreas Böttcher (CEO) and Julie Nakagawa (Artistic Director), DanceWorks Chicago fills a niche in the dance ecosystem. The traditional dance company focus is putting on a show, where as DWC puts the individual artist first by developing their capacities and highlighting their strengths and successes. Dancers are encouraged to explore their technical capability as well as their artistic curiosity through an individualized and deeply personal approach. In addition, DWC encourages new voices in choreography and connects established choreographers with mentorship opportunities. Our commitment is to Community vs. Company, the Participatory, rather than the Proprietary. We strengthen and stimulate public engagement with the artistry as good dance citizens. We envision building a richer, more dynamic and more robust dance community.
