When I landed my first sales job as a contract outbound sales rep and began making cold calls for the first time, the fear and pain of rejections were so overwhelming I immediately wanted to quit and dreaded returning to work each following day. Instead of throwing in the towel, I began to evaluate my situation and understand my 'why' for taking this job. I wanted to learn to fearlessly pick up the phone to talk to anyone, generate business out of a list of names and numbers, and better negotiate and solve my clients' problems. I began asking myself, how can I maximize my time and achieve the success that I so very craved? My commute was 45-minutes each way and seemed a perfect time to rally and educate myself for the day's goals by listening to books and podcasts from top sales and psychology experts like Grant Cardone, Jeb Blount, Peter Voogd, Chris Voss, Dale Carnegie, and many more. Through this process, I discovered the commonality with every successful sales representative was to maintain a healthy pipeline of qualified leads. And to achieve this, I knew I needed to have the resilience to continually engage new prospects by making 150-200+ calls per day, reaching out on social channels, email, and protecting my golden selling hours to make contact with these prospects. After a solid month of consistent work, sticking to what the experts explain in their books about selling activity, and fighting those urges to quit, I finally began to enjoy the fruits of my labor. That following month the orders started rolling in, and I ended up crushing my monthly goals, hired on full-time after 3-months in the role, and the fear I once had turned into a passion for the process. There will always be calls and days that don't always go quite to plan, and that is perfectly okay. The real value is to focus on what I have complete control over, to maintain consistent selling activity for finding new qualified leads for my pipeline.
