Mark Blair Blair Lombard

Founder and President at FOR LOVE & ART®

As a hospice volunteer committed to elevating the quality of life for seniors, the sick, and the infirm, I discovered art's preternatural power to do so - psychosocially, cognitively, spiritually and physically - while visiting a patient bedside. Based on my personal experience with Miss Billie, I realized that engaging people while viewing artwork liberates them from the prisons of their failing bodies and dire circumstances. Sharing one's experience while seeing Monet, Homer or Rubens bonds participants intimately and evokes beauty, joy, and magic of life for all - even if just for a little while. Sharing the Art Experience bolsters the human spirit to triumph over fear, loneliness, resignation, tedium, despair...indeed, over death, itself. To celebrate art is to celebrate life! In 2010, For Love & Art (FL&A) was seeded, a 501(c)3 enterprise whose mission is to bring the Art Experience to those with limited mobility. Termed "therapeutic art," our service stimulates art appreciation while empowering caregivers to love people in creative and transformative ways. FL&A partners with community outreach programs of major museums around the world who give us express permission to use artworks from their collections as engagement tools for seniors and hospice. Virtual Museum ArtBooks contain nearly 2,000 digitized artworks separated by a museum. After being custom dedicated to donor specifications, these digital ArtBooks are endowed (usually as memorial gifts) to hospices and used by caregivers bedside. During our crowd-pleasing hour-long "Celebrating the Art Experience" program, trained FL&A volunteers showcase artwork on a senior community's big-screen television while actively engaging audience members to express their thoughts and feelings. Veterans FL&A deliver "Special Edition VMAs" to VAMCs where therapists use in exposure therapy sessions for veterans coping with stress issues. Kids FL&A endows Virtual Museum ArtBooks to children's hospitals.
