Phil is an award winning Enterprise Software CMO driven to help companies transform themselves with a brand first approach. He combines an analytical data-driven approach to marketing with a creative capacity that has reshaped iconic brands around the globe. As Chief Marketing Officer for NewStore, Phil oversees a global team in marketing, inside sales, corporate communications, and design. He has built the marketing organization from the ground up for this General Catalyst backed startup, resulting a world-class team steeped in Account-Based Marketing and supported with modern MarTech. Previously, Phil was CMO of the leading enterprise software solution for managing and securing open source software, Black Duck. There Phil turned around a marketing organization, repositioning the brand, and supported the company pivot into the security space. Prior to Black Duck, Phil founded Protobrand, a brand consultancy at the forefront of consumer insight. His early career in the fields of cognitive science and research psychology at Stanford, U.C. Berkeley, and UCLA gave him his passion for data. In his consulting roles, Phil's past clients include American Express, Bank of America, Baskin-Robbins, Citibank, Deloitte, Doosan Group, Dunkin’ Donuts, Gap, General Foods, Hershey’s, Hardee’s, Houghton-Mifflin, IBM, Infiniti, Lahey Clinic, Mastercard, RadioShack, Reebok, Samsung, Sprint, Texaco, VistaPrint, and UPS Phil began his career at Ogilvy & Mather in New York, where he was fortunate enough to once have lunch with David Ogilvy. Phil has an MBA from Dartmouth College’s Tuck School of Business, where he has lectured on issues of Branding and Marketing, and B.A. from UC Berkeley where he graduated summa cum laude.
