Professor Lawrence Zeegen is Executive Dean of Design at Ravensbourne University London. Professor Zeegen leads Ravensbourne’s new Institute for Creativity and Technology, launching September 2020 in the Design District at Greenwich Peninsula. As PVC, Zeegen leads the university’s research across areas that include AR / MR / VR, UX and UI, smart cities and wearable technologies and the departments of Business Development , Incubation and CreativeLab; Ravensbourne’s new in-house creative agency working on commercial, non-commercial 3rd sector and in-house content, branding and design projects. The GradSchool, a new suite of postgraduate courses, launch in two phases within the Institute for Creativity and Technology under Zeegen’s direction for 2020/21 and 2021/22. Previously Executive Dean of Design at Ravensbourne, Zeegen led in the extensive redevelopment of the undergraduate portfolio of courses across Architecture, Communication Design and Fashion. Zeegen has held senior positions in design education at University of the Arts London, Kingston University and University of Brighton. Zeegen has lectured extensively at conferences nationally and internationally. Zeegen’s practice as an illustrator, upon graduation with BA (Hons) in Graphic Arts (1st class) from Camberwell College of Arts in 1986 and MA Illustration from the Royal College of Art in 1989, has included extensive work for major international newspapers, magazines, book publishers, design companies and advertising agencies. Zeegen was a regular contributing illustrator for The Guardian newspaper between 2005 and 2010. A founding partner of London-based illustration studio Big Orange in 1989, a founding director of Heart – one of the UK’s foremost contemporary illustration agencies in 1992, in 2006 Zeegen launched AgencyRush before departing to take a more active role in design education. As a design writer, Zeegen has contributed to numerous publications including Creative Review, Grafik, MacFormat, The Journal and Varoom, Digital Creative Arts, Computer Arts and Computer Arts Projects. The author of nine published books on graphic arts since 2005 and a contributor to many more, Zeegen's recent books include Fifty Years of Illustration (Laurence King) and Ladybird by Design (Penguin). Zeegen is trustee for the De Le Warr Pavilion and Creative Conscious Awards, a member of the Design Council Sounding Board. Zeegen is a former trustee of D&AD (2013/16) and former Vice President of Icograda (2011/15). Zeegen is fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.
