Greg Gdowski, Ph.D.

Executive Director and Associate Professor (BME) at University of Rochester

My three career P's are Passion, Profession, and People. Passion: My passion is to develop better tools that greatly impact healthcare. I was fortunate to have grown up within an entrepreneurial startup-oriented family. My parents started a medical device company in 1973 in Taunton, MA; manufacturing silicone medical products including some of the first silicone urinary catheters, and wound drains on the market. That experience instilled my passion for developing medical products. My experiences at the University of Rochester and Blue Highway/Welch Allyn have allowed me to follow my passion. I have innovated products in many different surgical specialties. I have served on NIH study sections for five different Institutes; many focused on biotechnology commercialization. As a NIH Study Section Chair, I have led a diverse committee of scientists, clinicians, engineers and entrepreneurs tasked in reviewing SBIR and STTR biotechnology-focused commercialization grants. I have taught classes on biotechnology commercialization including identifying unmet clinical needs, technological evaluation, market and intellectual property landscapes, ideation, voice of the customer methodology, user centric design, risk analyses, human factors, and product development. Profession: I have always felt obligated to further my profession. I serve as an ABET Program Evaluator where I help review and make accreditation decisions for undergraduate Biomedical Engineering programs. I have had leadership roles in local, regional, and international professional societies representing all engineering disciplines. In my most recent role within IEEE, I serve as the incoming Region 1 Director responsible for managing 22 Sections with over 24,000 members/engineers located in the northeastern US. I will also have a seat on the IEEE Board of Directors providing oversight for its assets and annual revenue ($500M). People: The important P! I have had leadership roles where I have assembled and worked with teams. I am a very hands-on individual; I prefer to work within the center of the team. I enjoy learning about the people around me and finding ways to make them succeed. I am extraordinarily proud of all of the students I have mentored, and I couldn’t be more thrilled to see them as alumni succeeding at all levels within the medical device industry. My students have gone on to become valued clinical specialists, product development engineers, R&D engineers, quality engineers, and regulatory specialists.
